Fake girlfriends and Hall of Fame shutouts

What’s this sports world coming to these days — fake girlfriends for Heisman trophy candidates and a Hall of Fame shutout.

My question and I’m sure as well as everyone else’s: how can you have a fake girlfriend?

You either know you have a real girlfriend or you don’t. Admittedly, I’m sure had my share of fake girlfriends in my youth like Farrah Fawcett and Cindy Crawford, along with multitudes of young men coming of age in the ‘70s and ‘80s. But this is way different. Strange in fact.

I’m not buying the story that Manti Te’o is an innocent victim. I hear he’s going to hold a fake press conference to tell everybody his side of the story. We’ll send fake reporters there to cover it.

I’m all aboard the big no vote coming out of Cooperstown. I don’t know what they’re going to do for the Hall of Fame celebration this summer, but none of those dopers deserve it. It’s called a Hall of Fame, not a Hall of Shame.

Where does MLB go from here? Will the writers ever vote anyone in from the steroids era? How do they know who juiced and who didn’t?

Personally, I’m tired of it all. It’s time they let Pete Rose, aka Charlie Hustle, into the Hall. All he did was bet on some baseball games he managed. He didn’t do anything unnatural when he was belting out his 4,256 base hits. That’s not to say I’m going to be a big fan of the Hit King’s new reality show, “Hits and Mrs.” Now, that appears to be the fake girlfriend.

The Man: It was a sad day in Cardinal Nation Sunday with the passing of Stan “The Man” Musial. Perfectly named, he was a true gentlemen of the game. Of all the times I was fortunate to cross his path over the years, he was always most gracious and humble, willing to sign an autograph for all fans, young and old alike.

I was just a young Cardinal fan when I first saw Stan the Man in the parking lot following my very first Cardinal game in the late ‘60s I believe. We saw some commotion around a car and heard a boy inside the vehicle say the words “Uncle Stan.” The Man signed my scorecard which I still have today.

Baseball needs more ballplayers like Stan Musial. Today’s stars could sure learn a thing or two how he handled himself and treated people. I’m sure Stan’s a big hit in heaven and playing his beloved harmonica.

• Class act: Tommy Canale likes to win ballgames just as much as the next coach, but the IVCC basketball coach knows the true meaning of the word coach. He stayed behind with Eagle Michael Murray last week when Murray endured a muscle spasm that gave him severe chest pains and restricted breathing, while the basketball team took the floor to resume the second half. Only until Canale knew Murray was going to be OK, did he go back to the bench.

Michael’s father, Aaron, said that gesture meant everything to the Murrays.

Well done coach.
