Schwab earns Player of Week honors
Illinois Valley Community College women’s basketball star Arnisha Thomas has been named National Junior College Athletic Association Player of the Week following last week’s action. It is believed to be the first time an IVCC athlete has been so honored by the NJCAA.
“This is a huge honor for Arnisha and for our program,” said IVCC women’s coach Pat Cinotte.
The Eagles picked up back-to-back wins last week, the NJCAA web site said, “behind Thomas’ dominant interior play.”
Thomas, a sophomore guard from Milwaukee, averaged 31.5 points and 16.5 rebounds in Arrowhead Conference wins over Highland (28 points and 17 rebounds) and Sauk (35 points and 16 rebounds).
The Eagle women, 15-4 and ranked 17th in the nation, host Illinois Central at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Thomas also earned Region IV Player of the Week honors following last week’s action along with IVCC's Alec Schwab. Schwab earned District A honors with 56 points (including 7 threes), 12 rebounds, six assists and two steals in a pair of losses. The former St. Bede Bruin standout had 29 points vs. Highland and 27 vs. Sauk. It is the fourth time Schwab has earned Player of the Week honors in his two seasons.
The IVCC men host Monmouth Junior Varsity at 1 p.m. Sunday. The record setting 1987-88 and 1988-89 IVCC men’s basketball teams will be honored Sunday at halftime.
• Murray mending: IVCC sophomore Michael Murray returned to action Thursday after a scare during a IVCC game on Jan. 17. He sustained a muscle spasm that caused severe chest pains and restrained breathing during halftime of the Eagles' home game with Highland. He was examined by a doctor on site and taken to the hospital for further examination.
