Library announces upcoming programs

PRINCETON — How much of our cerebral cortex is dedicated to the lyrics and tunes of the TV shows we’ve grown up with and the advertising jingles that accompanied them? The Princeton Public Library will celebrate this hidden cultural wellspring at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, with Charlie Gebeck at the keyboard and Ron McCutchan, the library’s programs coordinator, as master of ceremonies.

This will be an interactive program, part sing-along and part “Name That Tune.” There will also be special video “commercial breaks” and McCutchan and Gebeck hope that audience members will come prepared to hum or whistle a few theme songs to test the knowledge of the rest of the participants (“Stump the Host”) as well. All generations of television viewers are welcome, so there’ll be lots of opportunity to learn about shows before or after your time and to share your favorites too.

For the confirmed bookworm, archivist or literary collector, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the Princeton Public Library curator Margaret Martinkus will talk about basic book repair and maintenance. Martinkus is responsible for maintaining the books in the Princeton Public Library collection, dealing with wear and tear like torn pages and loose bindings. She will demonstrate archivally sound methods that will strengthen your books without causing additional damage. Anyone with a home library will find something useful to take away from this program.
