PRINCETON — Today, Thursday, Talk About: Basic Book Repair and Maintenance with library curator Margaret Martinkus will be presented at 6:30 p.m. at the Princeton Public Library.
On Friday, midnight is the deadline for “Seeing Red,” the digital photo show.
On Saturday, Praise and Coffee will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday is also Bring Your Child to the Library Day. There will be free totes in the Youth Services area while supplies last.
On Monday, the Festival 56 Committee will meet at 4 p.m., and the Monday Night Movie will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Good girl Sandy and greaser Danny fall in love over the summer, but now they are in the same high school. Will they be able to rekindle their love?
On Tuesday, the preschool story hour will take place at 10:30 a.m., and the theme will be seals. There will be music by Miss Cheryl. Fortnightly will meet at 10:30 a.m.; WUNT will meet at 6:30 p.m.; and Talk About: E-book and E-Reader Tutorial and an introduction to PPL’s new Zinlo online magazine subscriptions will be presented at 6:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, the Crafters Club will meet from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the Nerd Club will meet at 6 p.m.
On Feb. 7, Workshop: Papercraft: Valentine Cards will meet at 6:30 p.m.
WALNUT — Winter Adult Enrichment Classes have been scheduled at the Walnut Public Library. All classes are on Saturdays beginning at 9:30 a.m. The cost of the classes will be kept at $10. If the cost is more than $10, it will be noted. All classes will be held at the library, except for the CPR class. Payment for the class must be made at the time you reserve your spot. You can send your reservation payment to Walnut Public Library, PO Box 728, Walnut, IL 61376-0728, or just stop in at 101 Heaton, in Walnut.
Classes are:
• Feb. 9 — Beginner wood carving by Gene Henrickson.
• Feb. 23 — Paper bead class. The group will be making a variety of beads, sizes and shapes and techniques for stringing the beads to make jewelry. All materials will be provided.
• March 9 — CPR class. The price for this class will be $30 for one person, $40 for couples. This class will be held at the Walnut Community Building, 129 S. Main St. If you need certification or to be re-certified this class is for you.
More classes are being planned, so check back to this spot often to see what’s new.
A reminder: the library now has three binders full of coupons to exchange. There is no limit on how many coupons you can take, and if you have coupons you do not use, please bring them to the library, even your expired ones. What can’t be used in the binders is sent to troops serving overseas.
The staff is also available to help anyone learn computer basics such as Internet, email, eBay, word processing, Publisher or Excel. Just call with your needs and a class will be set up.
“The library is here to serve you, but we can’t help you unless you let us know your needs,” said library director Michele McAlvey. “We may be super librarians, but we really can’t read your mind!”
LADD — The Ladd Public Library continues to hold its preschool story times on the first and third Monday of each month at 10:30 a.m.
DEPUE — The Selby Township Library hosts a blood pressure and blood sugar screening clinic the second Tuesday of each month. Stop in anytime between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. to have your pressure and sugar checked by a health care professional. The clinic is provided by St. Margaret’s Health and is free and open to the public.
TISKILWA — Be sure to check out the Tiskilwa Public Library’s new website at www.tisklib.org. Anyone with Internet access can utilize this new library tool. Librarian Karyn Stark said they are pleased to offer everyone the ability to search the collection by using the search box in the upper right hand corner of the home page. Patrons may search by title, author, subject, etc. Stark said it’s easy to contact the library as well with any questions, comments and requests.
The next library book club will meet at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 18 to discuss “A Hundred Flowers” by Gail Tsukiyama. This moving story follows a family in 1957 China during the Cultural Revolution of Chairman Mao. Stark said patrons will enjoy reading about these ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances with grace and courage.

SHEFFIELD — The Sheffield Public Library will host a weekly story hour for children ages 3-5 during the months of March and April. A specific day and time will be set after registration. Please call librarian Sue Lanxon at 815-454-2628 or 815-454-2592 to registering your child.
In addition, the library would like to start a monthly book club. Interested adults should call either phone number. Any feedback regarding either of these endeavors would be greatly appreciated.
The library has recently purchased three new laptops for public use. The purchase was made possible by donations from the Conrad Hewitt family, the Sheffield Pride Organization, and the memorial fund at the library. All of the laptops have Microsoft Office, wireless Internet access, and printing capabilities.
New books continue to be added to the collection. Book titles that we do not have can be obtained through the RAILS interlibrary loan program. Audio books can also be ordered for patron use.
Winter hours are Monday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Saturday 9 - noon. The library is closed on Thursdays and Sundays.
SPRING VALLEY — Story time is held every Tuesday from 5:30 to 6 p.m. in the children’s room at the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library. There is a story and a craft-related project during this time for preschool children through second grade. A parent must accompany their child. This is free of charge.
The library is collecting aluminum cans with the proceeds going to the support of the library. The cans may be dropped off at the library during the hours of operation, which are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Wednesday; 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The cans should be tied in a plastic bag and placed in the large box inside the west front door. People living in Webster Park may drop off their bags of cans at 202 Elm St. in the driveway. The library board meets at 8 a.m. the second Tuesday of every month.
LAMOILLE — Computer classes continue at the LaMoille-Clarion Public Library. Classes are offered on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m. and Tuesday evening at 5:15 p.m. Each class lasts about one hour. LASALLE — Join the LaSalle Public Library at 6 p.m. Tuesday for “Civil War Nurse Clara Barton.” Barton earned fame as the first woman to serve as a nurse on the front lines of a battlefield. This first-person program introduces Barton as a tireless worker who faced remarkable challenges in her quest to care for wounded soldiers. Learn about the medical conditions during the American Civil War and about the courage required for a woman who dared to brave the war’s front lines.
History comes alive in the talented hands of historian Leslie Goddard who tells fascinating stories and creates vivid portraits of some of history’s most memorable women. With experience as a historian, actor, and museum teacher, Leslie Goddard brings a unique perspective to her history presentations.
This program is part of a partnership in a series on the Civil War between the Canal Corridor Association, LaSalle Public Library and Peru Public Library.
Trained as a historian, Goddard earned a Ph.D. from Northwestern University, specializing in U.S. cultural history, American studies, and women’s history. She also holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in theater and has worked in the field of museum interpretation for nearly 10 years. Her programs combine her experience as a teacher and actor with her background as a historian and researcher.
Goddard writes and lectures frequently on American history, with particular expertise in the areas of women’s history and Chicago cultural history. She has presented numerous lectures and presentations for museums, libraries, community centers, and civic organizations.
