Welcome to the ‘Har Bowl/Super Baugh’

The Super Bowl’s going to take on a new twist Sunday with the matchup of the Harbaugh brothers, Jim and John.

Gotta like the names they’re coming up with for this sibling matchup.

The “Har Bowl.”

The “Bro Bowl.”

The “Super Baugh.”

As a kid, my brother, Kent, make that my much older brother, Kent, and I always had our share of Bro Bowls playing “interception” in the neighborhood with our friends like Kip Cheek, Kelly Fosdick, John Thompson and any other boy running around Atlanta, Ill.

Those were some fun times. I could have only dreamed of taking our games to the level the Harbaughs are going to Sunday.

What a day it’s going to be for their parents and families. Their dad, Jack, a longtime high school coach, has to be really popping those buttons. But who does Mr. and Mrs. Harbaugh root for? The first tie in Super Bowl history?

It’s a great dilemma to have.

As Jack Harbaugh has been noted to tell his son and their teams, “Who’s got it better than us? NOBODY!”

Nobody will have it better than the Harbaughs Sunday in New Orleans.

Super picks: Each year I like to poll some of our resident football experts to see who their picks to click are for the Super Bowl. Looks like it’s too close to call.

Jesse Brandt (PHS athletic director, former Stockton High School QB): 49ers 28-24.

Steve Amy (PHS wrestling/football coach, former Rockridge High School running back): 49ers 24-21.

Dan Foes (PHS track/football coach, former Buda Western lineman): Ravens 34-31.

Jesse Snyder (PHS football coach, former Rockford College/Lena-Winslow gridder): Ravens.

Randy Tieman (Hall football coach, former Red Devil player): Ravens 34-31.

Eric Bryant (Hall athletic director, assistant football coach, former Red Devil running back): Ravens 34-31.

Jeff Ohlson (BV football coach, former Princeton running back): 49ers 32-24

Brent Jamison (BCR correspondent): 49ers 31-20.

Yours truly (BCR sports scribe, former sandlot player from Atlanta, Ill.): 49ers 27-21.

Sad to hear: I’d like to pass on my most deepest condolences to the Monier and Colmone families for their recent losses.

Jan Monier, devoted mother of four and staunch Bureau Valley Storm fan, lost her courageous battle to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). She was a supporter of her son Jordan and the Storm basketball team right to the very end. She was a big backer of Jordan’s siblings, Kristie, Brad and Hillary, and their teams before that. I’m so glad she was able to live to see most of Jordan’s senior season. He played Friday night at Morrison, the night after his mother’s passing, and I know she would have wanted him to.

We lost Greg Colmone, 53, (Hall class of ‘77) much too soon on Tuesday morning. He ran the Spring Valley 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament for years and was the former PA announcer for Hall Red Devil football and basketball games. Nobody bled more Cardinal red nor Fighting Illini Orange and Blue. He was also known as an avid runner for St. Jude’s.

Both will be sadly missed by all.

Into the Hall: Congratulations again to Gary Coates for his recent induction into the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association on Hall of Fame. It was an honor much deserved and long overdue. He was a highly successful coach in both sports at PHS as well as a great promoter and ambassador.
