Questions dealing with building a new school, electrical aggregation, flood control taxes, and fire department upgrades will be on the April 9 consolidated election ballot for some Bureau County residents.
Bureau County Clerk Kami Hieronymus said the final deadline was Jan. 22 for governmental boards to approve referendums in time for the April 9 ballot. The referendum questions had to be received in her office by Jan. 31. The referendums on the spring ballot are considered binding, unless stated as an advisory referendum, and must be approved by a simple majority vote, Hieronymus said.
For voters in unincorporated areas of Bureau County, the Bureau County Board will ask whether they want the county board to pursue electrical aggregation for them.
The question reads as follows: “Shall Bureau County have the authority to arrange for the supply of electricity for its rural residential and small commercial retail customers who have not opted out of such program?”
Voters in Hall High School District 502 will be asked whether to approve $32 million in bonds to build a new school.
The question reads as follows: “Shall the Board of Education of Hall Township High School District Number 502, Bureau County, Illinois, build and equip a new high school building, improve the site thereof, demolish all or a portion of the existing school building and issue bonds of said School District to the amount of $32,000,000 for the purpose of paying the costs thereof?”
Voters in Spring Valley will be asked to approve bonds to buy new equipment for the fire department.
The question reads as follows: “Shall the city of Spring Valley, Bureau County, Illinois, finance the acquisition of a fire engine/pumper, including related equipment and costs, and issue its bonds up to the amount of $550,000 for the purpose of paying the cost thereof?”
Voters in the Cherry Fire Protection District will also be asked to approve money for an upgrade to the fire department.
The question reads as follows: “Shall the Cherry Fire Protection District, Bureau County, Illinois, build and equip a new fire station and improve the site thereof and issue its bonds in the amount of $100,000 for the purpose of paying the costs thereof?”
Voters in Tiskilwa will be asked to vote on whether to approve a flood control tax.
The question reads as follows: “Shall Division 112 of the Illinois Municipal Code permitting municipalities to levy a flood control tax on all taxable property to build, raise, strengthen, or repair the levees around the municipality at a rate not to exceed .1666 annually, and for a period not to exceed 7 years, be adopted by the village of Tiskilwa?”
