SPRING VALLEY — Hall’s ladies competed well on
Senior Night Thursday producing a roughly fought contest with Midland. Ultimately, the Lady Red Devils were not able to keep up at the free throw line, and it cost them. The Timberwolves won 38-33.
Midland’s Sydney Foster led the game with 11 points. Hall’s Becca Herrmann led her team with 10 points.
The differences in the game, according to Hall coach Mike Struna, were turnovers in the first half, and Midland getting 17 points at the free throw line as opposed to the Lady Red Devils’ paltry five points.
Indeed it was a game that saw a total of 53 free-throw attempts between the two teams. Hall went around 24 percent (5 of 21) at the line whereas Midland shot nearly 60 percent (17 of 29). With both teams matching one another’s poor field goal shooting, that was easily the deciding factor.
“I thought our full court man-to-man got us back in the game. The girls kept playing hard, and I am proud of that,” Struna said.
Regarding his five seniors who started the game, Struna said, “We had two that came back and really helped us. Jacquie Wallaert, Bekka Dagreadt and Val Hoffert have been with us all four years. And then Nicki Ernat and Kari Cissel came back out after their junior year. I’m proud of all five of them.”
Wallaert had eight points in the effort.
The game was unsurprisingly slow with so many well-deserved whistles blaring throughout the game. At the end of the first quarter, Hall was down 9-4. In the second, the offenses went silent for most of the period. Hall tacked on three points while Midland didn’t score in the quarter until late when Foster hit one from downtown. Wallaert answered with a three-pointer of her own to bring Hall within two. Then Midland tacked on five quick points before the end of the half leaving the score 17-10.
Early in the third quarter, Hall made an attempt at a run, but it faded at five points. The game remained within reach when the fourth quarter began. But Hall was unable to convert at the line, while Midland put the game away on their end of the court.
• Hall will be hosting a 2A regional beginning Monday at Red Devil Gymnasium. The Lady Devils will face Bureau Valley at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
