What a crazy week of weather. From nearly 70 degrees to wind chills that were several degrees below zero. Gotta love the Midwest, don’t you? I’ve gone from wearing no coat to three layers of shirts and a winter coat, scarf and gloves in less than seven days.

So ... what did you think of this year’s Super Bowl? Aside from the fact the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers were no where to be seen, I’m wondering what you thought of the game, the commercials, the halftime performance?

I did read somewhere that a single, 30-minute commercial during the three and one-half hour broadcast cost about $3.75 million. What the heck is up with that? I have no idea how many commercials actually were televised, but even so, I know the dollars added up to a phenomenal amount of money.

While I like watching those commercials as much as the next guy, I have to believe none of us ran out to the store in the middle of the game to buy whatever product was being promoted. Wouldn’t it be cool if next year all those advertisers decided to skip the commercials, pool their money together and actually give it to something that really made a difference — like people in this country who really need it? Just a thought ...

What’s the BigDeal? Every week, the Bureau County Republican teams up with area businesses to offer readers an opportunity to cash in on a money-saving deal. You can find our BigDeals! on our website at www.bcrnews.com. Following are this week’s BigDeals!:

• Treat yourself to a one-hour, full-body massage at Princeton Family Therapeutic Massage. This is a great deal for only $25, since it’s regularly priced at $50. This deal begins today, Tuesday.

• Ready to escape the winter blues? Head on up to Key Lime Cove in Gurnee and get a queen, deluxe room with waterpark passes for up to six people. This deal is valid from Feb. 8 to Feb. 28, with only two blackout dates — Feb. 15 and Feb. 17. Enjoy all the fun for only $129 (regularly priced at $286). Note that a $16.95 resort fee is charged at the time of booking. This deal begins Thursday.

Illinois Valley Living: The BCR is up to our elbows in fun features as we work on the Spring 2013 edition of Illinois Valley Living. Like the past editions, I know you are going to really enjoy this upcoming edition too.

I’m adding a new feature in the upcoming edition called the “Illinois Valley Insider,” where we are asking questions on Facebook and then publishing the answers in the magazine. The questions all pertain to your favorite spots in the Illinois Valley. Watch for them!

I know it’s still a few days away, but Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Whether you’re planning on buying a big box of chocolates, a dozen roses, jewelry, a night on the town or something else special ... please try to patronize your local merchants. When you shop in the county, it’s a win-win situation for us all.

Thought for the day: “Prosperity makes friends, adversity tries them.” Publilius Syrus.

Thought for tomorrow: “Man’s greatest actions are performed in minor struggles. Life, misfortune, isolation, abandonment and poverty are battlefields which have their heroes — obscure heroes who are at times greater than illustrious heroes.” Victor Hugo.

After those warm days last week, many of my daffodils are already about 2 inches tall. Bet they’re surprised!

Just an FYI: If you need to complain about something, I’ll be happy to listen ... as long as you will be happy to listen to me. It’s a two-way street around here.

There’s a great line in one of my favorite songs that says, “The more we take, the less we become.” What if we all practiced those words this week? And remember ... you are important to me and the BCR.
