Extension office will offer program on Feb. 21

PRINCETON — What is a dietary supplement? Should you take a supplement? Will a supplement interact with your prescription medication? Answers to these questions and more will be presented at the local leader lesson “Supplements or Food” sponsored by University of Illinois Extension – Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, Putnam Unit.

Laura Barr, University of Illinois nutrition and wellness educator, will present the program via teleconference at 10 a.m. Feb. 21 at the University of Illinois Extension - Bureau County office, 850 Thompson St. in Princeton. This program is open to the public. Anyone who would like to attend should call the extension office at 815-875-2878.

Participants will be learning about vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, nutraceuticals, probiotics and flavonoids and where these substances can be found in the foods we eat. Each participant is asked to bring a list of all medications and supplements they are currently taking.

There will also be discussion on FDA regulations of supplements and how some substances can interact and interfere with prescription medications and other over-the-counter preparations.

All programs offered through the University of Illinois Extension are open to all individuals regardless of place of residence, race, creed, national origin, gender, physical or mental disability, or marital status. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in this program, contact the extension office at 815-875-2878.
