Lady Bruins roll to regional crown

SPRING VALLEY - The top-seeded St. Bede Lady Bruins rolled to the Spring Valley Hall 2A Regional championship Thursday night, defeating Ottawa Marquette 53-38.

The Lady Bruins outsccored the Lady Cru 29-16 in the second half to cruise to victory behind senior center Mo Dean (17 points, 9 rebounds) and senior guards Lydia Stariha (11 points) and Laura Sickley (11 points).

St. Bede (17-15) advances to the Somonauk Sectional to play Aurora Christian at 6 p.m. Monday. AC was a 49-43 winner over Seneca at Wilmington.

1A regionals

At Varna: Putnam County defeated Midland 40-32 to claim its first regional championship since 1984.

At Annawan: The host Bravettes rolled over Lincoln Trail Conference rival Wethersfield 75-59

Annawan and PC will head to the Oglesby Sectional at IVCC on Monday. PC awaits the winner of the Hinckley Regional, which was postponed Thursday to Saturday, for a 6 p.m. tip Monday. Annawan faces Newark, the Serena Regional champion, at 7:30 p.m.

3-point contest: LaMoille/Ohio's Shiela Browning and Ragen Forbes advanced to sectionals from the Serena 1A regional 3-point Contest. Bureau Valley's Nicole Bornsheuer was the top shooter (8) at Hall.
