Streator, IVC find new conference homes

One former NCIC school’s move to a new conference has opened the door for a current NCIC school to make its own switch.

Streator has accepted an invitation to the Interstate Eight Conference, pending board approval Tuesday evening, at the same time declining to entertain a move to the Corn Belt Conference. With that decision, Chillicothe IVC has been extended an invitation by the Corn Belt, according to the Senior Reports.

Streator, which joined the Northern Illinois Big 12 after leaving the NCIC in 2010-11, also met with officials of the Corn Belt, but informed them it was looking at other options.

The Senior Reports said the Corn Belt Conference extended an invitation to IVC to become a full member beginning with the 2014-15 school year. IVC principal Kenton Bergman told the Peoria Journal Star “is exactly what we were hoping for.”

The Grey Ghosts would be the only addition to the Corn Belt, league President Lance Thurman of Stanford Olympia said. Lincoln had also expressed an interest in the Corn Belt.

IVC is presently a member of the NCIC for all sports except football with Princeton and St. Bede, both of whom will join the Three Rivers Conference this fall. IVC will play football in the West Central Conference next year.

Dixon will be leaving the Northern Illinois Big 12 next school year in favor of the Big Northern, where two former NCIC partners, Mendota and Rock Falls have found a home.

In regards to Streator’s pending departure in 2014, NIB-12 president Travis McGuire of Rochelle told the Senior Reports that the conference would meet to “discuss and weigh our options.”
