Annawan wins seventh-grade state title

The Annawan Braves defeated Dieterich 45-40 to capture the IESA 1A seventh-grade state championship on Thursday at St. Joseph. It marks the first state championship for Annawan at any level.

This one was all Braves early on, as Annawan (22-2) sprinted out to an 8-1 first quarter lead. The Roadrunners made back-to-back threes to end the half, cutting it to 21-13 and sank yet another three to make it 21-16.

Brendan Shaw sank eight of his game-high 19 points as the Braves outscored the Roadrunners, 10-4, to close out the third quarter.

Dieterich pulled within two, but clutch free-throws by Ben Buresh with 10 seconds left iced the game and the state title for Annawan. Buresh finished with 15 points, including 7 for 9 from the charity stripe, and Owen Landwehr added eight points.
