Annawan wins seventh-grade state title
The Annawan Braves defeated Dieterich 45-40 to capture the IESA 1A seventh-grade state championship on Thursday at St. Joseph. It marks the first state championship for Annawan at any level.
This one was all Braves early on, as Annawan (22-2) sprinted out to an 8-1 first quarter lead. The Roadrunners made back-to-back threes to end the half, cutting it to 21-13 and sank yet another three to make it 21-16.
Brendan Shaw sank eight of his game-high 19 points as the Braves outscored the Roadrunners, 10-4, to close out the third quarter.
Dieterich pulled within two, but clutch free-throws by Ben Buresh with 10 seconds left iced the game and the state title for Annawan. Buresh finished with 15 points, including 7 for 9 from the charity stripe, and Owen Landwehr added eight points.
BVEC girls: Bureau Valley North is hosting the Bureau Valley Elementary Girls Basketball Tournament which got underway Friday. Games start up at 10 a.m. Saturday with semifinals slate for 6 p.m. Monday and finals at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Bradford (8-0) and Ohio (7-1) are the top two seeds.
