Bureau Valley School Board 1-21

MANLIUS — The Bureau Valley School Board took action on the following items at its meeting Jan. 21:

• Heard the personnel committee reviewed staffing for next year. Interim Superintendent Dennis Thompson said there are four retirees, including the home economics and industrial arts teachers. in order to continue those programs, Thompson said both teachers agreed to continue working part-time.

• Heard the door replacement throughout the district has been completed.

• Heard the annual Foundation Drawdown will be held March 23 at Arnie’s in Deer Grove.

• Heard from Bureau Valley South Principal Kristal LeRette that an after-school program has been instituted at Buda with a 21st Century Grant funded through the Regional Office of Education. Seventy-eight students are currently enrolled for homework assistance; a similar program is already in place at BVHS. LeRette described the program as an hour of homework and tutoring, and then fun.

• Adopted a bullying policy as presented; board policy wording has not changed since last review. Interim Superintendent Jim Whitmore said the district is encountering more evidence of cyberbullying.

• Revised the 2012-13 school calendar to show the school improvement day is moved from March 6 to March 20 due to ISAT testing.

• Approved the addition of the Guitar Club to the high school activity account.

• Accepted the resignation of BV North Literary Speech Team sponsor Nora Kelly for next year.

• Approved an extension of a maternity leave for Special Schools employee Olivia Johnston.
