PPL announces theme and title for 2013 community art show

Published: Monday, March 4, 2013 3:14 p.m. CDT

PRINCETON — The Princeton Public Library is announcing that the theme and title for its 2013 community art show will be “The Architecture of Art: Framing the Imagination, Building by Design.”

Student and adult artists in all media, styles and schools of thought are invited to participate in this exhibit, whose title and theme is intentionally loose. All works of visual art involve intention, planning, structure, and an awareness of space. It is for the individual artist to decide where/how/whether her or his art intersects with the profession of architecture or, indeed, with the architecture of the mind. The exhibit is open to all fine art original artworks including painting, drawing, print-making, sculpture, fiber arts, jewelry, ceramics, mixed media, digital media and photography.

The exhibition will run April 1-27. While the finished artwork is not due at the library until March 25, participating artists must submit a registration form along with a photograph (or sketch) of each piece along with dimensions no later than Friday in order to be included in the show. All work must the made by the artist submitting the piece and must be family-oriented and appropriate for the library’s general audience. Information and registration packets for participants are available now at the circulation desk at the library. There is no fee for entering the exhibition, but all two-dimensional work should be display ready, including a frame and the correct hanging hardware. For more information on the art show, contact Margaret Martinkus, library curator, at 815-875-1331 or e-mail The Princeton Public Library is located at 698 E. Peru St. in Princeton.

April 15 will be the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Matson Public Library building, the Princeton Public Library’s previous home. This anniversary is one of the inspirations for this year’s theme. In conjunction with “The Architecture of Art” during the month of April, the Princeton Public Library will present a number of films and public programs on art and architectural themes, including a program on the history of the Matson Public Library. Dates and times for these programs will be announced in the near future. The library will also host a digital photography show on the theme of “Architecture” on the Library Cafe’s Facebook page in April. Deadline for submissions for the digital photography show will be April 1. Photos should be 800 pixels or larger and should be e-mailed to Dave Cook, Library Cafe manager, at or delivered to the library on a USB flash drive, CD or memory card.
