PRINCETON – For the first time ever, several churches around Bureau County have joined together this year to offer a $1,000 Christian Service Scholarship to one student who has demonstrated Christian service to their school, church and community.

Pastor Brian Strom of Christ Community Church in Princeton said providing a scholarship opportunity to students has been a goal the churches have worked on for awhile, and this year the plan has come together

“We want to help recognize students who are living their Christian faith. It’s our way to give them a continuation to further the development of their own life ... It’s our way of saying, ‘Way to go. Here’s some help for your future,’” he said.

Strom said the churches’ goal is to increase funds in the future so that more students may be awarded.

According to the scholarship guidelines, ideal recipients display love and understanding of their Christian faith; articulate a commitment, not just to performing acts of service, but to living a Christ focused life; demonstrate awareness that their gifts are blessings from God; and provide persuasive evidence of their intelligence, maturity, humility and leadership ability in the kingdom of God.

The scholarship will provide tuition assistance to any college of the recipient’s choice.

To be eligible, applicants must be devoted followers of Jesus Christ, demonstrate their devotion to Jesus through acts of service to church, school and community and be a senior of any school in Bureau County.

A committee of up to 10 representatives from local churches of Bureau County will convene to review scholarships and make a determination of the recipient. The award will be announced and given at this year’s Baccalaureate service of the receiving high school recipient.

Applicants may apply online or download an application online at The deadline for applications are April 1.
