From the editor’s desk
A quick trip around my yard the other day showed daffodils and tulips with their heads popping up through the soil. Clearly, I wasn’t expecting to see these welcome friends, but I have to admit they sure brought a warm ray of sunshine to my still-too-cold world. It won’t be long now ...
So what’s the BigDeal? Every week, the Bureau County Republican offers its readers an opportunity to save some cash with its BigDeals! which can be found on our website at www.bcrnews.com. The BCR partners up with area retailers and service providers to offer you these BigDeals! If you have a business and would like to participate in this fun-filled opportunity, let us know.
The BCR is putting its finishing touches on our upcoming Spring 2013 Illinois Valley Living magazine. I know you’re going to enjoy it!
On the back page of every edition of the BCR, we reserve that space for you. We call the page “For You, From You,” and we encourage you — our readers — to submit either your own photography or an old picture from the past. It’s been incredibly popular, and I’ve heard several folks say it’s the first page they turn to when they get their newspapers. We’ve had quite a variety of photos on that back page, and quite frankly, I’ve enjoyed them as much as many of you.
For those of you who have never contributed a photo, it’s really easy. Just email it to BCR Copy Editor Terry Himes at email@example.com and include information in your email about the photo. You can also mail it to Himes’ attention at BCR, P.O. Box 340, Princeton, IL 61356; or you can just stop in the office with the photo, and we’ll scan it while you wait.
And for those of you who regularly contribute these photos, please keep ‘em coming. Our stash of photos is growing fairly slim, so anything you’d like to contribute would be much appreciated. Have questions? Contact Himes at 815-875-4461, ext. 228.
Where in the World is the BCR? While this feature has been running for several years, I still hear from people who enjoy seeing where you’ve been traveling. Whether it’s just a few miles away, across the country or even across the pond, I’d like to urge you to take along a copy of your BCR and have someone snap a photo of you holding it, once you get to your destination.
The rest is easy. Email the photo to BCR Associate Editor Rita Roberts at firstname.lastname@example.org, bring it by the office or drop it in the mail. Make sure you give Roberts information about where you went, where the photo was taken and who is in the photo. We’ll be happy to let your friends and neighbors know ... “Where in the World is the BCR?”
Thought for today: “I had to fight hard against loneliness, abuse and the knowledge that any mistake I made would be magnified because I was the only black man out there. Many people resented my impatience and honesty, but I never cared about acceptance as much as I cared about respect.” Jackie Robinson.
Thought for tomorrow: “The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it.” Flannery O’Connor.
As we proceed through the Lenten season, many churches and organizations are hosting a variety of events like fish fries and pancake/sausage breakfasts. In most cases, these fundraisers are very important to our area churches. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending one or more of these events.
Boys basketball regionals, school plays, concerts, competitions — both academic and athletic ... the list is seemingly endless when it comes to the number of activities our area young people participate in. Please support them. I can’t imagine how they would feel to know nobody came to see them. Watch ‘em while you can. And remember ... you are important to me and the BCR.
