PAC will offer a variety of classes and workshops starting in March
PRINCETON — In an ongoing effort to enhance participation in activities at the Prairie Arts Center, the Prairie Arts Council will offer a variety of classes and workshops throughout the year. Upcoming classes and workshops for the month of March include jewelry making, floral design and working with design techniques on fiber.
The first class offered in March is a jewelry class. Students will create a necklace using a combination of antique beads and semi precious stones. Instructor Kay Cushman will share her life-long interest in collecting antique and Czechoslovadian beads. Students will learn the history of glass beads. This class is intended for the more experienced student in jewelry making. This is a two-session class with each session lasting two hours. Jewelry making tools will be available, however, students are asked to bring their own if they have them. This class will be March 12 and 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. The registration deadline is March 8. The cost is $30 for PAC members and $34 for non-members. There is also a $25 supply fee payable to Cushman at the first class.
Cushman is a life-long collector of glass and antique beads. She attended jewelry making classes at the Chicago Art Institute and was trained under the direction of a designer from the Guggenheim in Germany.
“Spruce up your Spring Wreath” is a workshop that will give participants some design inspiration for sprucing up a wreath just in time for Easter. Instructor Jane Ousec will demonstrate use of tools and materials that floral designers use in their profession, as well as share her expertise in floral design. Students are invited to bring their own wreath to class and get pointers on how to spruce it up. Students will also learn how to make professional looking bows to use in any floral design. Students are asked to bring
four to five yards of wire edged ribbon and take home a beautiful bow. This workshop will take place on March 14 from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. The cost of workshop is $15 for PAC members and $18 for non-members. The registration deadline is March 11.
Ousec has more than 30 years of experience as a craft artist. She trained as a floral designer at the American Floral Art School in Chicago. She is currently employed as
a floral designer at Cattails in Utica.
A “Fabulous Fibers Workshop” will be offered March 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. Students will learn how to create fun, fabulous designs on fiber. Instructor Salena Nelson will share her knowledge and demonstrate a variety of resistance and surface design techniques. Students will learn how to apply these techniques to achieve designs and turn an ordinary T-shirt or piece of fabric into a work of art. Students are asked to bring two articles of clothing or two pieces of fabric made with 100 percent natural fiber such as cotton, linen or silk. Rubber gloves will be furnished at class. The cost for this workshop is $28 for PAC members and $32 for non-members. Registration deadline is March 16.
Nelson studied textiles at Berea College in Berea, Ky., where she earned her bachelor’s degree in studio art.
