Weidner, the BCR Track and Athlete of the Year for 2012, from Bureau Valley, recorded a school freshman record for North Central College, tossing the shot put 50-10 3/4 in a winning effort at the Feb. 8-9 Chicagoland Indoor Championships.

Three of Weidner’s classmates are also making their first go-around in college track — Kimi Sanden (distance, ISU), Derrick Johnson (distance, Eastern Illinois) and Natalie Swanson (weights, North Park University).

Bureau Valley product Cody Taylor is a sophomore distance runner for Iowa Western College.

• University of Illinois senior Hunter Mickow of Princeton ran a career-best time of 14:19.82 in the 5,000 meters to place 14th in the Big 10 Championships in Geneva, Ohio on Feb. 23. The Illini men finished second as a team, their best finish since 2000.

• Augustana College sophomore Lorraine Stamberger of LaMoille took part in Augustana College’s 3,200-meter relay team that clocked a new PepsiCo Center record (9:34.93) at the Feb. 14 Augustana Invitational in Rock Island. She also placed placed third in the 600 meters (1:46.53.

Hall has produced five track and field athletes with Kendall Rush (jumps) and Scott Janusick (distance) at ISU, brother T.J. and sister Liz Mosbach at Mt. Mercy University and Anthony Urbanski (400, 800 meters, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater).

Softball

Two area players are swinging away in softball. Princeton’s Alyssa James, a senior infielder and the Graceland University Yellowjackets (3-6) have eight games under their belt, including a trip to Texas. James went 2-4 with an RBI in a 4-1 win over Waldorf in the Winter Dome Classic in Davenport, Iowa on Sunday. Graceland travels to Wichita, Kan. on Friday for the Friends University Tournament.

At Bradley, Brittany Burgess (St. Bede), and the Lady Braves are off to an 8-6 start with a trip to Fort Collins, Colo. on deck this weekend.
