Illinois Valley Community College’s sophomore guard tandem of Alec Schwab and Michael Murray have been honored by the Arrowhead Conference.
Schwab of Peru, a graduate of St. Bede Academy, was named first team all-conference and Murray, a Princeton High School graduate, was named to the second team.
Schwab averaged 21.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in conference. Murray averaged 14.2 points and 9.3 rebounds, while shooting 53 percent from the floor and 78 percent from the free throw line.
The Eagles ventured to Kishwaukee for regional play Thursday where Murray took a nasty fall. He was called for a questionable block call, and on his way down to the floor, his head hit someone’s knee, IVCC coach Tommy Canale told the BCR.
Murray was cut open in the back of his head and had a 1-inch gash that took four staples to close. He was taken off the floor on a stretcher to the hospital and given a CT scan which came back normal, Canale said.
On Friday morning, Canale said Murray was home resting and has a headache. Canale was unsure if Murray had sustained a concussion.
Schwab led IVCC (18-11) in defeat with 24 points and five steals. Murray added 14 points and eight rebounds before his departure.
The 2013 Co-BCR Athletes of the Year have been teamed up for quite the 1-2 punch for the Eagles, especially of late. Murray had 20 points with 15 rebounds, while Schwab added 19 points in Saturday’s 82-77 win over Olive-Harvey. The game they combined for 48 had Murray firing in 28 in an 85-81 win at Black Hawk East on Feb. 21.
• IVCC women win: Back on the Hilltop, the IVCC Lady Eagles defeated Black Hawk in a NJCAA Division II regional quarterfinal 84-67. Arnisha Thomas and Sydonia Daniels each scored 22 points, and Kara Kistenfeger added 20. No. 2 IVCC will face No. 3 Elgin at 6 p.m. Saturday back on the home court.
