PRINCETON – Bureau County United Way is revving up for its Caribbean-themed spring fundraiser on March 23.
The event will conclude the 41st annual campaign, which set a $120,000 goal.
BCUW Executive Director Michelle Lymberopoulos confirmed 68 percent of the goal has been raised thus far.
The tropical evening at Wise Guys Bar & Grill will feature a cheeseburger in paradise bar, margarita fountain, music, dancing, raffles and live and silent auctions.
“This event was so popular last year, people were requesting we do it again this year,” Lymberopoulos said.
The Fabulous Frank & Dave is also back by popular demand, performing a wide variety of originals, classic rock and current pop hits.
Last year’s spring event raised around $12,000 after expenses, according to Lymberopoulos.
“It raised more than any event in the past,” she said. “Our hope is to do as well, if not better this year.”
The night will include the fourth annual Chair-ity Auction, which includes 15 chairs – all shapes and sizes – painted by local artists and businesses.
“It’s fun. People love them, and it’s re-purposing things that might otherwise end up in a landfill,” Lymberopoulos said. “It brings a lot of creativity to the event.”
The Chair-ity Auction, alone, collected $3,300 at last year’s event.
“It’s a big boost to our bottom line,” Lymberopoulos said.
A variety of items, event tickets and certificates to local businesses have also been donated and will be up for grabs in the live and silent auctions.
A preview of just a few auction items include an overnight stay with dinner for two at the Chestnut Street Inn in Sheffield; a private wine tasting for up to 20 people at August Hill Winery; an Xbox 360 from Walmart; Chicago White Sox tickets donated by WZOE; four Chicago Black Hawks tickets for the April 19 game donated by ServiceMaster; a rejuvenation station package from Anytime Fitness; and John Deere Classic tickets donated by Piehl Motors.
Tickets for the event are still available and will be available until gone. To purchase tickets, call the BCUW office at 815-872-0821 or stop in at Bead Buzz, located at 432 S. Main St., Princeton.
“Folks need to come out and enjoy our island atmosphere after a long, cold winter and support the work the BCUW does,” Lymberopoulos said. “Wear your best island attire.”
The BCUW supports 15 local non-profit health and human agencies, as well as provides referral services and community projects, such as impact grants and the annual Christmas toy drive. The 2012 toy drive served nearly 500 Bureau County kids in need.
Among BCUW contributions, 99 percent stay in Bureau County.
