NEPONSET – A fire broke out Sunday evening in a Neponset business storage shop located on the east side of the village, south of the railroad tracks.
The Neponset Fire Department was first to response to the Morton Building. Mutual aid was called from Sheffield, Buda and Wyanet. Neponset Police Department was also on scene.
Sheffield Fire Chief Andy Lanxon said his department was called around 7:30 p.m. He said around 25 firefighters were on the scene.
Lanxon said the shop was owned by a local business man who used the building as a storage place for his equipment. The fire destroyed about a fourth of the structure and a semi-tractor trailer that was parked inside the shop. Lanxon said firefighters were able to save a backhoe tractor that was pulled from the structure.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, but Lanxon said no foul play was suspected.
He confirmed no one was in the building when the fire started, and no injuries were reported during the fire.
Mutual aid firefighters left the scene around 11 p.m., while Neponset firefighters stayed on scene until around midnight.
Neponset Fire Department could not be reached for comment.
