Storm, Tigers brush up on their ABCs

STERLING — It was not a school day, but Bureau Valley and Princeton student-athletes brushed up on their ABCs in Saturday’s First Chance ABC track and field meet held at Westwood in Sterling.

The meet was set up in the A-B-C format for the first time with the No. 1 performers from each school competing in the A Division, the No. 2s in the B Division and the No. 3s in the C Division. No team scores were kept.

One of the top performances of the day came from Princeton senior Austen Stewart, who soared 6 feet, 6 inches to win the high jump. PHS coach Dan Foes said “I am very proud of him for the start he has put together this season. The rest of our young team performed very well also against some great competition.”

Also for Princeton, Caleb Strom placed fifth in the A 60-meter dash (7.38) and 10th in the A 200-meter dash (25.31), Kai Tomaszewski was third in the C 400-meter dash (57.39), Jacob Gleason was seventh in the B 400-meter dash (1:00.08), Luke Marselle was eighth in the C 60-meter hurdles (12.05), Cody Workman was eighth in the C 1600 meters (5:44.51), Zack Bogatitus was eighth in the B 200 meter dash (25.84) and Zach Andersen was ninth in the A 1600 meters (5:08.64).

The Tigers also placed fourth in the F/S A 4x200 relay, seventh in the varsity 4x800 relay (9:50.49) and eighth in the varsity 4x200 (1:44.63) and 4x800 (3:55.42) relays.

Foes said his “young team performed very well, also against some great competition.”

The Bureau Valley boys claimed fourths in the varsity 4x400 (3:44.65) and 4x800 (9:05.41) relays and sixth in the 4x200 (1:42.97). The top individual finishes for the Storm in the A Division were Kristian Konneck, fifth in the 200-meter dash (24.51), Logan Hoffert, eighth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.41) and Kane Eastwood in the 800-meters (2:16.38). Konneck also claimed ninth in the A 60-meters (7.56).

Top-place finishers for the Storm were Conor Mooney, who placed second in the B 60-meter hurdles (9.53), Tucker Schoff, who placed second in the C 60-meter hurdles (9.29) and third in the B 400 meters (57.66) and Andrew Smith, who claimed third in the C 800 meters (2:20.57).
