Red Devils will be well armed

SPRING VALLEY — As we wait to see exactly when baseball season is going to begin in the area, Hall is preparing for a new season with three seniors and 10 juniors on the roster. After a strong 2012 season, coach Tom Keegan is eager to see his kids take the field and show him what he has in action.

“On paper we have a chance to compete. But, paper is paper. And we’ll see what happens when we get on the diamond,” Keegan said. “We have some kids that we’ve returned that were part of a pretty successful campaign last year in the overall season. Hopefully, we can turn that into some wins and be playing good baseball come regional time.”

Regarding his returning players Keegan said, “I’m in the same boat as everybody else. I know who’s coming back, and in terms of the juniors and how they’re going to perform, we’re going to have to see what they do. “The kids coming back are led by Brett Fanning and Danny Nolasco. We need to be able to (play) on the mound, in the position and be able to swing the bat too.”

The Red Devils will be well armed on the mound, led by their ace, Fanning, a fourth-year varsity player. Fanning fashioned a 0.92 ERA and 6-2 record a year ago to go with a .346 batting average. Also in the Red Devil rotation will be Nolasco (6-0 1.32) and juniors Miguel Villareal (3-0, 1.75) and Austin Schmitt (4-1, 1.32) with a cast of others, including St. Bede transfer Taggert Venegas, a junior, waiting in the wings.

“We have some arms returning for us, and we’re looking for more success from them this year,” Keegan said.

Keegan looks for his junior class to be strong contributors after successful sophomore campaigns with the big club — Blake Moreno, for one, who returns as the Red Devils leader, batting. 377.

“He saw some action at catcher last year and DH as a sophomore. He had some pretty good at-bats,” Keegan said, adding that Villareal and Schmitt “gave us some pretty good innings, pretty good at-bats, and some pretty good defense.”

Other squad members include senior Matt Boucher (IF/OF) and juniors Ian Trevier (P/OF), Zach Urbanski (P/IF), Jake Byczynski (OF), Pete Mautino (OF/C), Trevor Urbanski (IF/DH) and Colten Zibert (OF/C).

This week’s season openers have been cancelled due to the weather. The rescheduled games don’t look like they have much of a chance to take place early next week.
