Give me Liberty, or give me a state title

Former Princeton High School standout Kelly Schail finally got her state championship.

Schail directed her seventh-grade Edwardsville Liberty Middle School volleyball team to the IESA 4A state championship, defeating Channanon 25-20, 25-23 in East Peoria. The Panthers finished 28-0.

Schail’s Panthers squad made state in each of the past three seasons, including a second-place finish in 2010 and fourth in 2011.

Liberty had to get past two previously unbeaten teams at state to reach the finals, defeating Frankfort Summit Hill and Pekin Edison.

Schail is a 1999 graduate of Princeton High School, a standout in volleyball and basketball. She holds the single-game scoring record for basketball with 41 point against LaSalle-Peru.

She went on to play volleyball for SIU-Edwardsville.

She teaches Spanish at Liberty and coaches sophomore volleyball for Edwardsville High School.
