BUDA — Kurt Bitting has qualified to represent Bureau Valley South and participate at the state level of the National Geographic Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. The state Bee will be Friday at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. Kurt is a seventh grade student and participates in a variety of extracurricular activities.

As one of the teachers of a finalist, Mae Jaggers, will also be attending the event on Friday. This is the fifth time that Jaggers has had a student qualify for the state level geography bee. Beau Sierens of Manlius Junior High, and Anson Murray and Dane Barnett, both of Bureau Valley South Junior High, qualified for the state level. Anson qualified both his seventh-grade year and eighth-grade year.

One winner from each state and territory will advance to the national competition, which will be May 20-22 at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. The final round of the 2013 National Geographic Bee, featuring Alex Trebek, will air on the National Geographic Channel on May 23 and later on public television stations.
