Paul Scoma dies at 60

PRINCETON — Longtime Princeton attorney Paul Scoma is remembered for his professionalism and high ethical standards.

Scoma died Monday at the age of 60. He was a partner in the Princeton law firm now known as Russell, English, Scoma and Beneke PC for 28 years until his retirement in 2010.

On Thursday, attorney Bob Russell talked about Scoma, his long-time friend and partner.

Russell said he has known Scoma for nearly 30 years and praised him for being an outstanding trial lawyer and a man with the highest ethical standards.

“He was always aggressively pursuing his clients’ interests, and he always did so in an ethical matter,” Russell said.

Also, Scoma always had time to discuss any topic, whether it was work or personal, Russell said. For a number of years, the two men would share morning talks about life, religion and work.

Scoma’s family was very important to him, Russell said.

“He was a very proud of both of his sons and very much in love with his wife,” Russell said.

Scoma was a man who held no hidden agendas, Russell added.

“He was meticulous and concerned about his work,” Russell said. “There were no loose ends in the Paul Scoma file.”

Princeton City Commissioner Terry Madsen, also an attorney, said he always enjoyed working with Scoma in the courtroom. Scoma had a polite and persuasive way of beating up the opposing attorney, but Scoma was the type of attorney that you still wanted to shake his hand afterwards, Madsen said.

Madsen will remember Scoma as a gentleman, always friendly and always persuasive, and a leader in the community.

In addition to his years of influence in courtrooms and legal settings, Scoma was also active in his church, the St. Louis Catholic Church of Princeton, and had been a trustee and board president for the Adeline E. Prouty Charitable Trust (Greenfield Retirement Home) and a director and board chairman for Perry Memorial Hospital.

Services for Scoma were held Friday at the St. Louis Catholic Church.
