Lady Bruins lose twice in Tennessee
SMYRNA, Tenn. — The Lady Bruins softball team, one of the many spring sports organizations in the area shut down by the weather, took their act on the road to the Nashville area Thursday to kick off the Lady Warrior Classic.
They played an evening doubleheader against the Central Mountain Wildcats of Pennsylvania and the Smyrna Bulldogs of Tennessee. Unfortunately, St. Bede fell by one run 1-0 to the Wildcats and then lost 9-1 against the Bulldogs.
Both contests were the first live-pitching experiences for the Bruins who managed just two hits in their first two games.
St. Bede coach Bill Prokup said, “I saw improvement in the first game as well. Timely hits, you know. You start making contact, and the third (batter) flew out. In the second game I saw a little life at the end. You know, Barbi Prokup came in and had a nice little hit. But you have to have more than a couple of those.”
The matchup with Smyrna seemed especially daunting as they are one of the few teams in the tournament that had nearly 20 games under their belt. The Bulldogs started quickly with a three run first inning and another run in the second to make it 4-0 Smyrna. Starting pitcher Christine Daley was relieved by Lainie Schwieckert. Schwieckert got a little wild in her second start of the day but led the Bruins out of the inning after two more runs had scored.
The Bruins got their first base runner thanks to Prokup taking a walk and extra bases on a wild pitch and a steal. Schwieckert handled business at the bottom of the inning, and the score remained 6-0 entering the fourth.
St. Bede’s Mo Dean singled in the top of the fourth but was stranded. In the top of the sixth, the Bruins added their only run that started with a walk by Christenson and an RBI from Lydia Stariha.
