Betty Ellis

SHEFFIELD — Betty M. Ellis, 84, of Sheffield died Friday, March 29, 2013, at Liberty Village in Princeton.

Betty Abbott was born Nov. 16, 1928, in DePue, the daughter of Ralph and Bessie (Henderson) Abbott. She graduated from DePue High School in 1946. She married Glenn W. Ellis on Aug. 4, 1946, in DePue. He died July 27, 2005.

Betty had owned and operated the Stitching Post in Sheffield for many years. She had also worked as a rural carrier for U.S. Post Office in Sheffield until retiring in 1989.

She was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Sheffield, where she had been a Sunday school teacher and a Bible school teacher, and active in many church groups. Betty was also a member of the Sheffield American Legion Auxiliary and Sheffield Women's Club. She had been a Camp Fire leader, 4-H leader and Cub Scout leader. Betty had also held offices in the church and Women's group. She enjoyed playing bridge, doing needle work and flower gardening.

Survivors include her daughter, Patty (Rich) Osborn, Springfield; her son, Jeff (Denise) Ellis of Walnut; three grandchildren, Heather (Craig) Creel of Dawson, Bethany (Caroline) Ellis of Auburn, Mass., and Jeremy (Jackie) Ellis of Walnut; seven great-grandchildren; a stepgreat-grandchild; a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Marge Rodgers; two brothers, Virgil Abbott and Charles Abbott; and an infant son, Ronald.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Church of Christ, Sheffield, with the Rev. Jane Courtright officiating. Burial will be in Elm Lawn Memorial Park, Princeton.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be made to First United Church of Christ in Sheffield.
