Hall hurlers shut out the Huskers

SPRING VALLEY — The Hall Red Devil pitching staff had a perfect 10 – two of them – Saturday against Serena at Kirby Park.

Danny Nolasco and Brett Fanning teamed up for a 10-0 shutout over the Huskers in the first game of a doubleheader and Taggert Venegas and Pete Mautino spun a 10-0 shutout in Game 2. They allowed a total of three Husker hits on the day and had good control, Hall coach Tom Keegan said.

“Our pitchers have been around the plate. We will need them to continue to step it up with a busy slate of games,” Keegan said.

The Red Devils broke open Game 1 with seven runs in the fourth inning to go up 9-0. Nolasco (2-4) and Trevor Urbanski (2-2) each drove in two runs, Venegas went 2-4 with a triple and RBI and Blake Moreno had a RBI double. Nolasco fanned five with one hit allowed through four innings and Fanning fanned the side in the fifth.

Hall’s lucky No. 7 came in the second inning of Game 2 for a quick 7-0 lead. The Red Devils plated three more runs in the third and Venegas (six strikeouts, two hits in four innings) and Mautino (three strikeouts in one inning) took care of the rest. Venegas (two RBIs) and Nolasco each had two hits.

The Red Devils (3-1) fell to Princeton 6-3 Monday at Kirby Park.
