ROCKFORD — Kenneth D. Palmer, 79, of Rockford passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, Rockford, surrounded by family, after a battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 26, 1933, to Harvey L. and Blanche (Hill) Palmer in Paris, Ill. He grew up in Princeton, graduating from Princeton High School in 1951. He started his education at the University of Michigan, transferring to the University of Illinois, where he earned his J.D., was editor of The Law Forum and graduated Order of the Coif. Prior to coming to Rockford in 1960, Ken practiced with LeForge Samuels in Decatur, followed by the law office of Max Swiren in Chicago, where he practiced appellate law. Ken was a jazz aficionado all his life and shared his passion for music with many. He was a close friend of Bill W where he made an impact for over 36 years.

On July 2, 1960, Ken married the love of his life, Emily Harper Adams. They found each other “the second time around” and enjoyed 52-plus years of adoration and mutual respect. Ken was a man of great integrity, character and honesty. Ken left this world as he lived, by giving. He donated his body for scientific research.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, William E. Palmer, and stepsons, Michael A. Adams and Mark K. Adams.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Emily; his children, Sally Palmer of Murrell’s Inlet, S.C., Robert (Kim) Palmer of Raleigh, N.C., Elisabeth Palmer of Rockford and Amy Flowers of Powell, Ohio; and his grandchildren, Brooke, Justin, Logan, Taylor and Rory.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford.

Donations in his name may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 2211 N. Oak Park Ave., Chicago, IL 60707.
