Verna Broers

WALNUT — Verna Lee Broers, 91, of Walnut died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at her home in Walnut.

Verna Lee was born Aug. 31, 1921, in Van Orin, the daughter of Bert and Ethel (King) Ward. She was united in marriage to Verden Broers on May 7, 1944, in Van Orin. He preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 2002.

She was an elementary school teacher and taught at the Meeks one-room schoolhouse, Tampico Grade School, Walnut Grade School and Deer Grove Grade School. Verna Lee was a member of the First Christian Church of Walnut and Deer Grove Town and Country Club. She loved to go ballroom dancing with Verden, loved cooking and teaching. Verna Lee loved her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by three daughters, Deanna (Dan) Hoge of Cambridge, Sharon (Tracey Krebsbach) of Peru and Janet (Randy) Walters of Tampico; one son, Douglas (Linda) Broers of Tampico; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother Donal Ward of Walnut; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Garland Funeral Home, Walnut, with the Rev. Brian Moore, pastor of the First Christian Church of Walnut, officiating. Burial will be in the Walnut Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established in her memory to the First Christian Church of Walnut, St. Jude and Walnut Manor Nursing Home.
