Lloyd Murphy

HENRY — Lloyd Clifford Murphy, 100, of Henry, formerly of Putnam, died at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday April 3, 2013, at Heartland Health Care Center in Henry.

Lloyd was born Oct. 18, 1912, in Putnam to Francis E. and Ruby R. (Heininger) Murphy. He married Lucille “Lucy” Van Meter on Aug. 15, 1937, in Elkhart, Ill. She preceded him in death on March 18, 2002.

Surviving is his daughter-in-law, Sharon Murphy of Henry; two sisters, Helen Yarrington of Putnam and Mary Jean (Clarence) Kelley of Henry; and one brother, Charles Murphy of Dallas, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his his son, Lloyd K. Murphy; two brothers, Kenneth and Allen Murphy; and one sister, Maxine Alstrin.

Lloyd graduated from Senachwine High School, Putnam, Class of 1930, attended Eureka College from 1930-31 and later attended Bradley University. While at Eureka College he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, the Tek House. Two of his fraternity brothers were former President Ronald “Dutch” Reagan and his brother, Neal “Moon” Reagan.

Lloyd, along with his wife and son Lloyd K., owned and operated Murphy’s Market in Henry for over 30 years. He was a member of the Putnam Christian Church, serving as an elder. He also was a member of the Princeton Elk’s Club and Duck’s Unlimited. Lloyd was a 60-year member of the Henry Masonic Lodge, 119, A.F & A.M., the Eastern Star, Mohamed Shrine and the Peoria Consistory. He was an outdoors man, loved to hunt, fish and most of all playing golf, still playing well into his 90’s.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Putnam Christian Church, Putnam. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m with Pastor Terry Broady officiating. Masonic rites will be accorded at 9:45 am. Burial will follow at Putnam Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Putnam Christian Church or to Heartland Heath Care Center.
