Weidner on the mend

Bureau Valley’s Regan Weidner may not have competed Wednesday, but she wore out the Rathje Track testing a hip injury she sustained during the indoor season.

BV coach Dale Donner said Weidner, a 2012 state medalist, has been doing pool workouts to stay in shape as she eased her way back from recovery. He expects her to compete Saturday at Mendota.

“(Thursday) was her first pain free day in two weeks, but did not want to chance her. We feel she is ready for a full load on Saturday,” he said.

• BV will be joined by Princeton, Hall, St. Bede and Amboy/LaMoille at Mendota’s Don Gooden Classic Saturday.

• PHS freshman Elise Blocki hurt her knee on the landing of her first long jump attempt and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. She was feared to have a season-ending injury. “Hopefully Elise is getting the care she needs, and she has a quick recovery,” coach Pat Hodge said.

• Sophomore Colbi Schertz, one of four PHS throwers in the Top 6, had her best throw by a foot at 34-2 1/2. She tied Amboy’s Autumn Smith, but had to settle for third place by the second-throw tiebreaker.

• The A/L co-op ran an all-LaMoille 4x200 relay of Kaitlyn Hildebrand, Laura Rieker, Meredith Stamberger and Shiela Browning, placing fourth.
