Learning Stage — theater appreciation for 2013

PRINCETON — Learning Stage, the newly renamed education committee of the Princeton Theatre Group, is announcing its 2013 schedule of programs designed to promote appreciation of live theatre locally and regionally.

In collaboration with its sister entity, Festival 56, Learning Stage will once again offer educational programs to deepen participants’ understanding and enjoyment of the festival’s summer season of plays. For four consecutive Wednesday evenings beginning June 5, Learning Stage will co-host, with the Princeton Public Library, a series of panel discussions about the festival’s summer line-up. This “Meet the Plays,” series will be followed on July 15 by “Festival 56 Reads,” a book club-style discussion of “The Master,” a fictionalized account of the life of Henry James, whose novel “Washington Square” is the basis for this season’s production of “The Heiress.” All these events will take place at the library.

Learning Stage will also offer, for a third consecutive summer, Camp 56, giving young people a hands-on experience in theatre production as well as choral roles in the festival musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” This year’s camp will run from June 17 to June 28.

On July 21, immediately preceding the Sunday matinee of “Treasure Island,” a “pirate lunch” on the set will help engage children in the production they will be seeing.

In the fall, a theatre bus tour to Chicago is in the works.

“Through our programs, Learning Stage aims to capture the imaginations of both seasoned theatre-goers and those who are just becoming acquainted with the vibrancy of live performance,” said Marina Carrott, chair of the Learning Stage committee. “We also want to give youth an opportunity to explore the possibility of participating in theatre themselves one day, as professionals or volunteers.”
