Open Prairie to observe GLBT Awareness Month

PRINCETON — Open Prairie United Church of Christ in Princeton will offer a series of programs during April in observance of Gay Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender Awareness Month. The church joins college campuses, religious congregations and other organizations throughout the United States in this effort.

Open Prairie’s April programs include two Sunday worship services and a Friday night film focused on faith and what it means to be a Christian who is also gay.

The theme for worship service this Sunday will be “More Light, More Truth, More Bible.”  What does the Bible really say?  On April 28, the worship service will include personal testimonies and stories from gay Christians and their parents. Sunday worship service at Open Prairie begins at 10:30 a.m.

At 7 p.m. on April 19, Open Prairie will host a viewing of the film “Through My Eyes.”  This 45-minute documentary features interviews with gay and lesbian youth and young adults. They have grown up in Christian churches and families who fear that being gay results in spiritual death or worse. The church will host a discussion, fellowship and refreshments following the film showing.

Open Prairie has chosen to focus on what it means to be a Christian and a Christian church in support of GLBT persons of faith. Many current issues are affecting the GLBT community: Marriage, the possibility of adoption and foster parenting and basic civil rights are a few of them.

The public is welcome and encouraged to attend any or all of these free events at Open Prairie, which is located at 25 E. Marion St. in Princeton (behind the Apollo Theater).

For further information, call the church at 815- 872-5150.
