Pre-Civil War quilt show fills museum
More than 120 people attended Tiskilwa’s Museum on Main event April 8 to learn about “The Underground Railroad and Secret Codes in pre-Civil War Quilts,” in a presentation by author and lecturer Clarice Boswell (left) who was assisted by her husband Hank. Civil War historians and quilt enthusiasts came from Tiskilwa, Putnam and Princeton, as well as Ottawa, Standard, LaSalle, Bradford and Hennepin. Boswell told family stories passed down by her grandmother, Lizzie Cannon, and spoke of the perilous escapes of fugitive slaves along the Underground Railroad as Hank, presented each quilt for the audience to see. The Tiskilwa Public Library sponsored the event, hosted by Tiskilwa Historical Society.
