St. Bede senior Damin Smith signed Monday morning to play basketball for IVCC. He is joined by his parents Audra Smith (front row, left) and Dave Smith; and (back row) IVCC coach Tommy Canale and St. Bede AD Tom McGunnigal.

OGLESBY — IVCC basketball coach Tommy Canale made a tour of the Illinois Valley on Monday, bringing four players into the Eagles’ nest.

St. Bede Academy was the first stop where the IVCC coach signed Bruins’ standout Damin Smith. Next came Mendota’s Trae Blumhorst, Ottawa’s J.D. Bryant and then Seneca’s Jimmy David.

On Tuesday, Canale expanded his horizons to sign Tim Smith of Joliet West and Torrance Johnson of Chicago Hope Academy. The IVCC coach said he has at least six or seven more recruits to add.

Canale was excited to land Smith, whom he says brings many good qualities.

“Damin will bring some athleticism and toughness to team. He has improved each year and has a bright future. He plays hard and will work hard too. Glad he chose IVCC,” he said.

Canale will also bring back returning freshmen Corey McCrary of North Lawndale, Ross Arteaga of Mendota and redshirts Will Harris of Dekalb and Mike Stephenitch of Amboy.

Canale said that IVCC sophomores Michael Murray (Princeton) and Alec Schwab (St. Bede) have many options to continue their careers at the next level, and will be taking visits soon. Murray has possibilities in both baseball and basketball.
