Illinois Valley Alzheimer’s Group organizes

The Illinois Valley Alzheimer’s Group met on April 3 to discuss upcoming events to support the local community.

A new group has formed in the area to support those suffering the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease and age-related dementia. The Illinois Valley Alzheimer’s Group plans and organizes events to educate and support people suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementia and those who care for them.

Peg Gonet of Granville has been facilitating Alzheimer’s Support Groups for more than 10 years. Joanne Milby, along with her family, has organized the Boo Milby 5K Memory Run for the past six years in honor of her late husband who died of Alzheimer’s Disease. In the past, she donated the proceeds of the run to an Illinois Chapter of a national Alzheimer’s organization.

While volunteering their time, both Peg and Joanne saw a need for more support in the local area for those who cannot travel out of the area for services. Beginning this year, all funds raised through the Boo Milby 5K Memory Run and other events stay in the local area to provide free educational seminars, lectures and support to families in the Illinois Valley.

There are several events planned that are free and open to the public.

The first event will take place on at 7 p.m. April 24 at the Red Cross Building in Peru. Law Elder Law will present a program covering topics such as designing a family protection plan, understanding Medicaid and planning to prevent the loss of savings and assets.

Care Partners Alzheimer Support Group will meet at 6 p.m. on May 15 at the Red Cross building in Peru. The guest speaker will be Kim Varju of Heritage Heathcare in Streator.  She will present on caregiver skills and tactics that you can use at home to keep your loved one with dementia stay safe, reduce anxiety and improve every day activities.

There are two fundraisers planned. The first is a Tupperware fundraiser on May 1. You can email boo15@att.net for an invitation or for more information.

The Illinois Valley Alzheimer’s Groups primary fundraiser, The Boo Milby 5K Memory Run, will start at 8 a.m. on Aug. 17 at Northwest School.

All funds raised by the Illinois Valley Alzheimer Group will be used to provide education and support programs for the Illinois Valley area.
