Patriot wins CSX Chemical Safety Excellence Award

At its 19th annual awards ceremony held at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, the CSX Railroad awarded Patriot Renewable Fuels the 2012 CSX Chemical Safety Excellence Award, the third time in four years that Patriot has received this award.

The annual CSX Chemical Safety Excellence Award celebrates the commitment by its customers to safe hazardous material rail car loading and maintenance. Recipients of this award understand the best practices of chemical safety and demonstrate a commitment to those practices and strong industry leadership among their peers. The awards are presented to qualified CSX customers who ship more than 600 carloads of hazardous materials or hazardous waste annually without experiencing a non-accident release during that year.

Patriot Renewable Fuels has been producing ethanol since September of 2008. Almost 100 percent of the ethanol is shipped by rail.

Patriot shipped 3,819 railroad tank cars of ethanol in 2012, with no safety issues. A railroad tank car holds about 28,500 gallons of ethanol.

Patriot’s yard crew is responsible for insuring that all Federal Railroad Administration’s requirements are met for each tank car shipped.

Patriot’s staff conducts detailed inspections of each rail car including wheels, brakes, valves, placards, all safety devices, and seals installed prior to placing the cars on the siding for shipment.

Information on every rail car bill of lading is provided by the yard crew to administration personnel.

The information is checked for accuracy by the administration personnel and entered in the railroad website.

Rail cars are loaded seven days a week. Rick Vondra, Patriot plant manager, and Vince McCabe, safety manager, commend the yard crew for following the FRA’s requirements at all times and in all weather conditions. The ethanol unit trains are shipped to points on the East Coast from New York to Florida.
