Martin moves up at Hall

SPRING VALLEY — It all worked out according to the plan.

Hall superintendent/principal Mike Struna ran the Lady Devils’ basketball program for a year when he was unable to fill the position at the start of the 2012-13 school year. With the season now behind him, he’s turning the program over to assistant coach Josiah Martin, who was approved at last week’s Hall board meeting.

“That was what I told the board. I’d do it for one year and if one of the assistants wanted to take it over they could,” said Struna, whose last coaching stint was 20 years ago at Mount Pulaski. “Josh’s built up a repertoire with the girls and he’s got a pretty good feel where the program is going.”

Martin said it’s a plus to have one year under his belt n the program,

“I had never experienced coaching girls before this year under Mike Struna,” he said. “I think he taught me a lot of things and it was good to get my feet wet being an assistant varsity for a year and I’m looking forward to taking over and giving it a shot as head coach.”

The new Lady Devils coach is excited to have the incoming senior class next year, including Becca Herrmann, Kaylee Golden and Brenna Faletti, who will be returning from injury. He said some of this year’s sophomores also gained some valuable varsity experience as well.

Martin, a first-year math teacher, is an assistant baseball coach. He was a three-year varsity basketball player at Canton High School and was an all-conference relief pitcher at Augustana College.

Struna dusted off his coach’s whistle after 20 years off last September, to replace Tim Swanson, who had been named to succeed former coach Dave Kain, who resigned.
