Storm snap skid vs. Morrison

It’s over. After 19 consecutive losses to Morrison, the Bureau Valley Storm broke through with a 5-3 win Friday over the Three Rivers rival Mustangs, at Ashford University Field, home of the Clinton Lumberkings, in Clinton, Iowa.

The Storm had just four hits, but made the most of them including a base hit and a RBI by Keaton Wagenknecht. Wagenknecht also had some mound magic, going the route with seven strikeouts while scattering four hit and two walks.

The Storm also beat Erie/Prophetstown at Clinton.

Bruins 5-10, Marquette 3-0: The Bruins came from behind, scoring four runs in the sixth inning to rally past Marquette in Saturday’s first game. Brad Groleau upped his record to 3-0 going all seven innings for the host Bruins.

Offensively, St. Bede was led by Brandon Pietrowski with two hits and two RBIs along with Groleau collecting two hits.

Game 2 was all Bruins with Brandon Pietrowski earning the win to move his record to 4-1 on the year, limiting Marquette to two hits in his six shutout innings of work. Jake Postula led the Bruins, going 3 for 4 including a double and two RBIs. Michael Bellino added a triple and double along with two RBIs and Steven Ebener added a single and double.

St. Bede 13, Henry 0: Damin Smith threw a no-hitter for the Bruins Friday allowing only three walks in the five-inning affair. He improved his record to 4-0 on the year.

Offensive support for the Bruins was led by Postula with two hits and a double, three RBIs and Sam Lucas with two singles and a triple with four RBIs. Also for the Bruins, Groleau and Austen Schwab (2 RBIs) each had two hits and Logan Bima added a triple and two RBIs.


St. Bede 16, Henry 0: While Smith had his no-hitter on the Academy baseball diamond, Lady Bruins Emmi Christensen spun one of her own over at the softball field. She had a five-inning no-hitter, striking eight eight Lady Mallards and walking one Friday at the Academy. Christine Daley knocked in three runs and Barbi Prokup (1-3), Nicole Yaklich (1-2) and Tara Kunkel (1-2) each drove in two runs.

St. Bede 3, Rock Falls 2: Winning pitcher Lainie Schweickert helped herself with a two-run double in the fourth inning to put the Lady Bruins up 3-0. Rock Falls answered with two unearned runs in the fifth, but Schweickert (8k, 2 bb) held on for the victory in the first game of a round-robin doubleheader. Christensen went 2-3 with an RBI.

Sherrard 10, St. Bede 0: The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader was a different story. Sherrard scored seven runs in the second inning on seven hits and helped by a couple of errors.
