It’s so pretty out right now! Daffodils, tulips, leaves popping, grass growing ... you have to love spring in the Midwest. Makes you want to count your blessings every time you can wake up and literally smell the flowers.

Our hearts at the Bureau County Republican, Putnam County Record, Tonica News and Shaw Media were broken last week, as we lost one of our dear friends, Cliff Arnold of Tonica. Cliff and his wife, Elin, were the previous owners of the Putnam County Record and Tonica News, which Shaw Media acquired in December 2012. Cliff and Elin have been long-time friends and customers of the BCR; we’ve known them for years. Needless to say, we will miss Cliff dearly — his stories, his laughter, his jokes. A great man ... and a great loss. Our sympathy is with Elin and their family.

What’s the BigDeal? Every week, the BCR offers you the opportunity to save some money at area businesses. You can find our BigDeals! on our website at www.bcrnews.com. Following are this week’s BigDeals:

• Just in time for Mother’s Day. Get a one-hour, full body massage for only $22.50 at Kathy’s Country Massage in Malden. This is really a great deal, since it’s regularly priced at $45.

• Pamper Mom, Grandma or yourself at Ooh La La Salon & Spa in Princeton, where you can get a $20 gift card for only $10. Wow! What a deal!

• Help Mom stay fit by getting a 20 punch fitness card at the Bureau County Metro Center in Princeton. This card — good for land, water or spin classes only — costs only $50, regularly priced at $100.

I had a blast the other night at Festival 56’s “Heartache Tonight: A Tribute to the Eagles,” held at the Grace Performing Arts Center in Princeton. The band played only Eagles’ classic rock music, and I don’t mind telling you it really took me back a few years. Wow! What a show!

Here’s the interesting part, though. As I looked around the crowd, I saw a lot of grey hair and bald heads ... and then I realized I was no longer that kid from the ‘70s who grew up on the Eagles. Instead I was one of those older generation folks who can sing every word to “Hotel California,” “Desperado,” “Lyin’ Eyes,” and more ... When did that happen? Oh, well, it was a great show — and quite frankly, I still get “A Peaceful Easy Feeling” when I hear their music, and “In the Long Run,” I guess I just have to be thankful I’m not “Already Gone.” Ha! Thanks to Festival 56 for bringing this show to town!

Where in the world is the BCR? Are you planning a vacation or holiday trip? Don’t forget to take along a copy of the BCR. Once you get to your destination, have someone snap a photo of you holding the BCR, and then send it to us along with pertinent information about who is in the photo and where you are. We’ll be happy to share your photo with other BCR readers, your friends, family and neighbors. Email your photo and information to BCR Associate Editor Rita Roberts at rroberts@bcrnews.com. You can also mail it to her attention or stop by our office, located at 800 Ace Road in Princeton.

Illinois Valley Living in progress: The Summer 2013 edition of Illinois Valley Living is in the works, and I don’t mind telling you, it’s going to be another fantastic magazine. I’ll keep you posted.

Thought for today: “An ounce of mother is worth more than a pound of clergy.” H.H. Birkins.

Mother’s Day is Sunday — a time to let all the women in your life know how special they are.

I hope all the ladies out there have a great Mother’s Day. Relax! Breathe! Take time for you. And remember ... you are important to me and the BCR.
