CHICAGO — On May 3, Andrew Blackert’s and Becky Dye’s fourth-grade classes at Bureau Valley North traveled to Chicago to see the sculptures and paintings the Art Institute had to offer. The trip was the culmination of a year long study of artists and their work in Susan Berry’s visual arts class.

The students studied artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol and Georgia O’Keeffe. In the art class, in addition to discussing artists, the students tried their hand at cubism, impressionism, realism, splatter painting, Pop Art and sculpture.

Finally, the students traveled to the Art Institute to see the masterpieces up-close. The children asked questions and offered comments as they were guided through the museum by Berry. One of the highlights of the tour of the Art Institute of Chicago was seeing Pablo Picasso’s painting, “The Three Musicians.” The painting was on loan from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. When the students were done with their tour, they walked over to Millennium Park to take in the fountains, Cloud Gate and the architecture of the city. The fourth grade classes and teachers enjoyed the learning adventure.
