Hoffert runs off with Mount Mercy

Katie Hoffert signs to run for Mount Mercy University. She was joined by her parents, Mark (front row, left) and Lisa Hoffert; and (back row) Mt. Mercy cross country coach Ryan Scheckel, Hall coaches Nick Hanck and Tom Keegan and Mount Mercy track coach Jamie Jimison.

SPRING VALLEY — Mount Mercy University has proven to be a safe haven for Hall High School runners in the past with the likes of Liz and T.J. Mosbach and Mikey and Kyle Miroux.

That was more than enough to convince current Hall High School senior Katie Hoffert. She signed with the Cedar Rapids, Iowa school to run with the Mustangs in both cross country and track, which she has done the past four years at Hall.

“I chose Mount Mercy because of the history of Red Devil Runners that have attended the University, as well as a respected biology and pre-med program,” Hoffert said.

Being reunited with Liz Mosbach, a good friend who is completing her freshman season at Mount Mercy, played a big part, Hoffert said, being able to run together and “hang out” like old times.

Hoffert said she never really considered any other schools.

“Mount Mercy was the first school I had looked at and I fell in love with it,” she said. “I never looked at any other schools because I knew this was the school for me. The location, the size and the curriculum just seemed to be a perfect fit for me.”

Hall cross country coach Tom Keegan said Mt. Mercy has been a good pipeline for Hall.

"Having a familiar face out there with Liz will help with the transition," he said. :It is always exciting to see kids continue onto the next level and she had the discipline, time management and organizational skills to succeed.  as excited as they are to get her to be a part of their team, i think they are even more excited to get a great student and person on their campus.
