Get Your Rear in Gear is Saturday

LADD – If it’s Memorial Day weekend, it must be time for Get Your Rear in Gear (GYRIG).

On May 25, Ladd will hold its fourth annual GYRIG 5K race.

Get Your Rear in Gear events are hosted by the Colon Cancer Coalition and designed to empower local communities by bringing awareness to colorectal cancer, provide support to those affected, and send a message for all to take charge of their own health.
Ladd’s first event was held in 2010, the creation of event coordinator Kathy Martin and her family and friends.

Martin is a colon cancer survivor. She was diagnosed in October 2008, and she and her family and friends attended a GYRIG event in Chicago in 2009.

Martin was inspired to create an event in Ladd, and she said the first three events have been great successes. Hundreds of people attended each event, and she has high hopes for this year’s event.

Pre-registration has begun for this year’s event and will continue until 6 p.m. Wednesday. Pre-registration fees until Wednesday are $25 for adults and $12 for children 12 and under.

After Wednesday, fees are $30 for adults and $15 for children.

Packets may be picked up at the Ladd Community Center from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. The Ladd Community Center (formerly St. Benedict’s Church Hall) is located at 303 S. Central Ave.

On Saturday, registration begins at 9 a.m. with the 5K Fun Run/Walk set to begin at 10 a.m.

The Colon Cancer Coalition, a grassroots organization that started in 2005 with one 5K race in Minneapolis, is on track to host 40 events in 2013.
