Prairie Arts Council announces scholarship recipients
PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council has awarded prizes in its 2013 Art Scholarship Competition, given this year in honor of Julia McCutchan, who is retiring from the board of directors after 14 years of service.
The winner of the $1,000 scholarship was Samantha Krieger, a graduate of Bureau Valley High School. Her high school art teacher was Sheila Heth. Samantha will attend Central College in Pella, Iowa, this fall, working toward her bachelor’s degree in art. The jurors were impressed by the variety of media and subject present in her work, the bold use of color and scale, the command of the principles of design, and by the very personal, creative approach her work demonstrated.
The first-place runner-up was Jacquie Wallaert, a graduate of Hall High School and student of Karen Klopcic. Jacquie will attend Dominican University in River Forest, working toward a double major in apparel design and merchandising. She will receive a $200 award. The jurors noted the unique variety of media present in her work, as well as the good use of color, and strong technical ability.
