There are approximately 2.6 million Muslims in the United States. Most of them are as concerned as their fellow Americans about the effects of religious fanaticism around the globe and at home. They have an additional reason for concern: The backlash against people of their faith since 9/11.
Terrorism and the impact of violent religious extremists concern us all. We do not believe, however, that using such terms as “the Muslim threat” — as appeared in a recent paid ad for a local meeting — makes us any safer. Rather we believe it demeans people of the Muslim faith, undermining the spirit of religious tolerance and cooperation that is a cornerstone of our American democracy.
