PRINCETON –áThe first ever Christian Service Scholarship was awarded to a Princeton High School graduate at Sunday’s baccalaureate service in the PHS auditorium.
This year, several churches around Bureau County joined together and presented their first $1,000 award to PHS senior Kathryn Krieger.
Pastor Brian Strom of Christ Community Church in Princeton said the churches wanted to help recognize students who are living a Christian faith. He said the scholarship is a way to say “way to go.
“We decided we wanted to do that with a little more than just words this year,” he said.
A committee of up to 10 representative from local churches convened to make a determination of this year’s recipient. The ideal recipient was a Bureau County student who demonstrated Christian service in school, church and community.
This year’s award presenter was Dennis Throneburg of Bunker Hill Church of God in Buda. Before recognizing Krieger, he highlighted just some of her accomplishments throughout her high school career.
“Today’s recipient used her talents and abilities to make a difference in all the areas, but what struck me the most was after looking at all these activities and reading the reference letters that was submitted with this application, I could see that this person was involved in behind the scenes’ jobs with the same enthusiasm as those that brought public attention, and did them all to the best to her ability,” he said.
Krieger plans to attend a four year liberal arts Christian college and pursue a double major in vocal music education and vocal performance.
