Thursday sports update

Bruins fall at sectionals

The St. Bede Bruins fell 5-2 to Beecher in Thursday's semifinals of the Seneca 2A sectional baseball tournament.

Logan Bima homered, but the Bruins committed four errors, had two runners picked off first base and had two runners thrown out at the plate. With the loss, the Bruins end their season at 19-3.

Beecher evened its record to .500 at 14-14, awaiting the winner of Friday's semifinal between Chicago Christian and El Paso-Gridley in Saturday's finals.

At Monmouth: Annawan/Wethersfield defeated Aledo Mercer County 7-1 in the Monmouth 2A sectionals, advancing to Saturday's finals against Eureka.

At Hennepin: Host Putnam County scored all 10 runs in the third inning to break open Thursday's 1A sectional baseball tournament, defeating Chicago Holy Trinity 11-0.

Both the PC baseball and softball (at Varna) teams will play in Saturday's sectional finals.

IHSA boys state track: Bureau Valley's Logan Hoffert qualified for Saturday's IHSA 1A State Track and Field finals in three events.

He was first in his flight and sixth overall in the triple jump with a jump of 42-10 1/2. He also advanced in the 300 hurdles, again winning his heat and ranking fifth overall with a time of 40.27.

Hoffert then ran on the Storm''s 4x400 relay, which finished third in its heat and ninth overall with a time of 3:32.11. He's joined by Ryan Taylor, Tucker Schoff and Daniel Trone.

St. Bede's Steven Gualandri will join Hoffert in the 300 hurdles, placing second in his heat and sixth overall with a time of 40.42.

Hall sophomore Al Baldonado will run in Saturday's finals of the 3200 meters, which has no prelims.

Hall's Landon Piccatto (triple jump, 300 hurdles) failed to advance as did Bureau Valley's Kristian Konneck (200) and 4x800 relay.

Princeton's Austen Stewart will compete in Friday's 2A prelims in the high jump.
