Lady Bruins, PC squads win sectional titles

The St. Bede Lady Bruins advanced to Monday's DeKalb Super-Sectional, riding the right arm of Lainie Schweickert to defeat Stillman Valley 1-0 in 10 innings in Saturday's Oregon 2A sectional championship.

Schweickert struck out 20 while allowing only three hits and two walks.

Abby Nowakowski drove in Tara Kunkel for the winning run in the 10th on a RBI single. Kunkel reached on a slap bunt single, went to third on a throwing error and before scoring the winning run.

The Lady Bruins (22-5) will play Aurora Central Catholic at 1 p.m. Monday in the DeKalb Super at NIU. ACC beat Gordan Tech 10-3 at Lisle.

Monday's winner will advance to the IHSA 2A finals in East Peoria at 3 p.m. Friday.

Class 1A softball: Putnam County bombed Newark 10-0 to capture the Midland 1A sectional crown.The Lady Panthers will proceed St. Bede on Monday, facing Milledgeville at 11 a.m. in the 1A super-sectional. Monday's winner will advance to the IHSA 1A finals in East Peoria at 10 a.m. Friday.

Class 1A baseball: Harold Fay threw a complete game, one-hit shutout, leading Putnam County to a 5-0 win over Grant Park in the sectionals finals at Hennepin Saturday. Xavier Warren and Jack Egan tripled and Cody Ballerini doubled.

The Panthers will face Hanover River Ridge at 10 a.m. in the Lisle Super-Sectional the winner earning a ticket to the IHSA 1A finals in Peoria at 10 a.m. Friday.

Class 2A baseball: Annawan/Wethersfield and Eureka will meet at 2 p.m. Monday at Monmouth College in the Monmouth Sectional title game. Oregon, which beat host Byron 5-4 in eight innings for a sectional title, awaits the winner in super-sectional  play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Augustana College.
